About Archiving Dungeons & Dragons Program Package By Rich Tietjens For Bally / Astrocade -------------------------------------------------- November 20, 2010, Updated February 16, 2015 By Paul Thacker These Dungeons & Dragons program packages were available for at least a couple of years, and may have had a number of different versions. At first, it was called the "Dungeons And Dragons Program Package." I actually have two nearly identical tapes from 1980, though even these may not be the earliest available, as they have more programs than were promoted in the first ad. These have a menu to select programs, in which you have to enter a period followed by the first character or few characters of the program name. The first matching string loads up. I've archived this as both the complete side A and B, where the menu will work as it did originally, as well as individual programs, which is what people here would likely want to use. I first posted about these based on a tape in the Bob Fabris collection. It had some machine language labels that looked like they went with the menu, but ended up being useless. When I looked at a second tape, an official release that I bought from atari2600.com, these were missing. Since it doesn't have any revisions to the programs themselves, I'm ignoring the one from the Bob Fabris collection. At the end of the second side of the tape, this one actually specifies that it's version 3.2, copyright 1982. I don't have access to this tape, and have only been able to reliably process the individual programs on the first side. I hope to get new recordings of this eventually. Updated Information from Paul to BallyAlley Yahoo group February 14, 2015 Message #13466 ------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: [ballyalley] Added D&D Program Package to BallyAlley.com This made me look over the 300 baud programs again. I noticed that the "About Archiving Dungeons & Dragons Program Package" article didn't include information about "Dungeons And Dragons Game Aid Package Version 3.2, Side B" since I hadn't managed to archive it at that point. http://www.ballyalley.com/program_downloads/300_baud_programs/Rich_Tietjens/ Rich_Tietjens.html http://www.ballyalley.com/program_downloads/300_baud_programs/Rich_Tietjens/ About%20Archiving%20D+D%20for%20Bally-Astrocade%20%28By%20Paul%20Thacker%29.txt I looked up my write-up from when I did upload these, message #11855. "I've had a recording of this tape for awhile, but I couldn't get Side B to process correctly. It packs the line numbers as bytes to save space, so the .txt conversion is difficult to read, but it will load fine. With the updated version of prg2txt and txt2prg, I was able to fix a few errors and get this running properly. I originally thought Dungeon Dust could freeze, but upon further testing, I think it's just really slow for all but the smallest rooms. This is the latest version I've seen (I'm not sure how many updates there were), so there are some programs you won't find anywhere else. I've included a note with loading instruction so you can skip ahead to the program you want."
